Heat pump water heaters provide high efficiency electrical heating of water. They have historically not had smart controls, been schedulable, in communication with the utility grid. This project will test algorithms for heat pump water heaters that activate the heat pump even during a load shed event in response to high chances of delivering cold water. This control logic will maintain customer satisfaction, even while responding to price and greenhouse gas (GHG) signals.
